Who we're looking for
Are you a passionate early career researcher with a clear vision to carry out your own research? Are you ready to lead an independent research group? Do you have a need for flexibility that would benefit from the additional support offered by this fellowship?
What we mean by ‘need for flexibility’
This scheme is for you if you have a current and ongoing need for flexible support due to personal circumstances, eg being a primary carer or having a clinically diagnosed health condition.
Are you eligible?
Alongside the requirement to demonstrate a need for flexibility, you can apply for this scheme if:
- You are at an early stage in your postdoctoral research career, ie you have either completed your PhD or have no more than six years of actual research experience since your PhD by the closing date of the round (career breaks are taken into account)
- You do not hold a permanent post (including proleptic position) in a university or not-for-profit organisation
- You do not hold, or have not previously held, an equivalent fellowship that allows you to be an independent group leader
- Your research is within 红桃视频's remit of natural sciences (for a full list, please see the subject groups and areas supported by the Society)

This scheme is funded by the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade (BIST).
You will be able to apply via our grant management system Flexi-Grant®.
Your application will be checked for eligibility by 红桃视频 Grants team and assessed by the Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships Selection Committee.
Initially, two Panel members with the most appropriate scientific expertise will review your application and then a longlist will be drawn. If you are longlisted, your application will be sent for independent peer review. The Panel will then assess your application in light of the peer review comments and they will draw a shortlist for interview. After the interviews, the Panel will make recommendations for funding.

The Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship
We welcome applications from disabled scientists and can provide adjustments to ensure that applicants can participate fully in the selection process. All requests for adjustments are made in confidentiality. Any request for an adjustment will not normally be shared with panel members unless it becomes relevant to the assessment process itself. If we need to share your request with anyone (for example if panel members are required to implement any adjustments during interviews), we will ask for your permission first.
Adjustments can include, but are not limited to:
- Extension of the application deadline
- Additional support to complete the application form
- Receiving the application form in a different format, such as in a Word document
- Support during interviews, including technical support for candidates requiring accessibility software or services
- Additional costs that candidates may incur on account of their particular disability to attend an interview
